CHAGFORD SHOW 19TH AUGUST
Some of the photographs that were on sale during the show are on my
photography page,
click

Also photos taken this year at the show are also on "My Photography" page as a
slide show.
Most of the photos were taken by my Daughter Elizabeth, only the
presentation shots at the end are mine.
It's all over! Well we think it is. Another great day at Chagford show,
the weather held out right up to the end of proceedings when the wind
picked up and it started to rain which made packing up a soggy affair
especially with all those photos.
we are back home, tired yet elated, and it's late (10.25pm) so photos of
the show will have to wait a day or two.
But this is how our Dartmoor Accommodation and photography stand turned
out.
Keep watching for the photos.

Chagford Show next week August 19th 2010

Livestock judging area 2009
Up-date 12th Aug
Its all go getting ready for "The Show". We are using a 3M X 6M white
Gazebo for the trade stand and I've been busy busy getting suitable
boards painted and ready to line the inside walls to hang photos and
literature on. Decided to use 30mm ridged polyurethane insulation boards
as they are lightweight yet strong and mounted on timber uprights
resting on the ground it should work ok, fingers crossed. Also sourcing
a suitable 240v power supply was awkward as we can't use a generator as
other trade stands are too close, so an inverter was needed. Elizabeth
(our daughter) in Norfolk had one from a previous project so hopefully
this will arrive soon. It's only a 350W and I could do with another so
that at least 3 PCs can be run to show our photos and accommodation.
Jill is busy with the normal day-to-day of the business plus printing
out loads of photos, ordering a banner, and photo canvases and looking
after me!
Lets hope the weather is good for next Thursday, there's some bad
weather due in the next few days, hope it passes quickly.
Up-date 11th Aug
Chagford Show
is just around the corner, in fact next Thursday 19th. We are having a
trade stand this year, we should have had one last year but we both went
down with Swine Flu and felt so weak just before the show that we gave
it a miss. Both of us attended anyway but Jill had her usual duty as
Judge in the Photography category, this was to be her last year of
judging having done it for possibly 10 years.
This year should again be a great day out for all, loads to see and do,
be early to arrive, witness the various agricultural classes being
judged.
Call in at our stand, opposite the horticultural tent, plot 14. it's
dartmooraccommodation.co.uk banner should be easy to spot.
Scroll halfway down this page for more pictures from last year, or go to
here for my Flickr photos.
June 2010

A day out on the South Devon Railway. Brilliant! From
Buckfastleigh to Totnes, only a short ride but fantastic fun. Hats off
to the volunteers who work tirelessly to make this all work so well. We
had intended to do the boat trip on the Dart but Totnes took up most of
the day

The Tinners fair in Chagford is always a great place for pictures

This doorway decoration in lower Street and the "Tin Man" outside the
Globe Inn in town just two examples.
April 2010
A quiet walk by our favourite river helps to restore the balance.

March 2010
Another trip to Norfolk, and the home of
lingodesign.co.uk
which is owned and run by our younger daughter Elizabeth. In a bid to
get the business relocated to their new home I was commissioned, or
rather "Dad will you come and help us", move in. loads to do and 2 weeks
later they were on the move. Only a short distance of 100 yards or so
but better premises for the design of websites.

The newly painted front door with refurbished brass-work looks just
great. Upstairs, designer Steve has a dedicated Studio away from the
distractions of the office and people coming and going.
March 2010
The Dartmoor Auctioneer,
otherwise known as John Wood,
lotsaway.co.uk, holds his general auction in Chagford,
with a fascinating collection of lots for auction. Something
for everyone here, from a few quid to thousands of pounds.

February 2010
Castle Drogo sits on top of the Teign Gorge, and from Furlong,
where we live, dominates the horizon. Jill was asked by the Okehampton
Times to take photos of visitors enjoying the guided tours of the roof,
which is not normally open to the public. However, quite a good covering
of snow had fallen overnight which left the roof very slippery and a
danger to visitors so we were alone (great) on the roof to enjoy the
views. Here's a couple of pictures from the morning, More on my
photography page.

I'm immensely proud and grateful to Janet Ruth, an American
authoress, for using one of my photographs of Scorhill Stone Circle as the
front cover image for her latest 300 page Romance Novel, Benin's Crown. I'm
a slow reader so haven't read it yet but the text below taken from the
rear cover describes the novel. Copies of the book are available from the
publishers Booksurge at
booksurge.com or by email
orders@booksurge.com Or Amazon at
Amazon.com
ISBN is 978-1-4392-6605-2

Janet with her book this Summer when
she and her family visited Devon.
As the daughter and only child of Queen Morveren and King Brenin,
young Addien leads a life of
luxury and security. But when all she loves is torn from her, she must
learn to survive by relying on her own courage and strength of character.
In doing so, she also learns about trusting others and holding onto her
faith. Growing to womanhood in dangerous times, she must face
disappointment, betrayal, and isolation while keeping a secret many would
die to discover. For she alone has the power to choose who will take her
father’s place as king. Set in the Dark Ages of British history, the story
moves from a Roman-built city, to a ring of standing stones, to a Celtic
stronghold, each based on real historical sites. In this land of contrast
merged the passion of the Celts, the intelligence of the Romans, and the
influence of the early church. This is where faith and fantasy meet, where
good and evil are not always clearly defined, and it is not always
possible to know the right thing to do.
(Previously
on Sunday 19th July, please see update below).
On the wall by our garden this Fox looks in need of feed but our hens are
only a few metres away. We watched it for a while
but possibly the house
and the smell of our dog might have put it off and it jumped down from the
wall and into the field and away.
It may well be back so a constant
lookout is necessary.
Update 13th January 2010
Sadly we think this fox, going by the
colour markings, died in the first week of the new year (2010) during the
very cold weather.
It now lies in a field not far from where this photo was taken, and as
nature provides, will help other wild animals and birds survive this
horrible weather.
Our bird table has never been busier, with garden birds including somewhat
rarer birds such as Hedge Sparrows, Nut Hatches, Wood Peckers, Jays.
We moved the table nearer the house, this seems to have deterred the Crows
and Magpies from coming to the table as it's too close to humans for
comfort.
The most territorial of the regular birds seem to be the Wagtails, which
will patrol the bird table attempting to shoo off all who dare come close.
He doesn't stand a chance overall and the Blackbirds have a higher pecking
order.
Our battery rescued free range Chickens have had to be culled, we had 2
left out of the original 3 and they had had a good life since being with
us. The severe cold was more than they could cope with and they hadn't
laid for weeks. They are not as prepared as normal hens, their genes are
for battery conditions and rather than them suffer we decided to take the
necessary action.
A thaw has started today, thank goodness. Yesterday afternoon (12th Jan)
saw a fresh 4 inches of snow in only a few hours causing havoc locally.
The National news featured the A30 and A38 on Dartmoor which had again
become impassable.
Our neighbours have been using our facilities as their borehole had frozen
up. I managed to get into Chagford yesterday morning and those that could
get in were buying sufficient provisions to last for a few days just in
case. Thank goodness we work from home.
Update 16th Jan
Prolonged
overnight rain and much milder temperatures has seen most of the snow
disappear, only the heaps in the drive remain.
Occasional sunshine this morning is a much welcome sight. Lunchtime now
and an afternoon walk is on the cards. The ground has remained frosted and
it will take some time for it to thaw. Shame I didn't get round to lifting
all the potatoes in the veg patch, with luck they will be ok.

Monsters in the Dartmoor National Park? Foxgloves were at their best in early June.
Below are just 2 of the many sculptures on
display (and for sale) at the Mythic Garden and Birch and Alder Arboretum
near Chagford. Open all year but the sculptures are seasonal from May
10th 2009. The low light at this time of year (late Sept) makes it a
wonderful place to visit.
Go to Mythic Garden website for
more info. Or visit
Flickr for more pictures and a slideshow.
